September Lunch and Learn - The Project Management Palette of Successful Hybrid Project Managers

Ways of Working

Thursday September 25th, 2025 @ 12:00PM

The project management profession finds itself at yet another inflection point. Interest in Agile is waning. Hopes are pinned on AI. At the same time, Hybrid project management is on the rise, as reported by PMI’s Pulse of the Profession (2023).So, what is Hybrid? The definition of Hybrid is vague... ”the combination of one or more project methodologies or approaches.” This is neither actionable nor particularly helpful.
To fill this void, some thought leaders have created interesting diagrams depicting the amalgamation of the cascading waterfall with iterative agile loops. Others have developed models to select the approach. Our September Lunch and Learn speaker, Alan Zucker, envisions the universe of project management practices as a palette. A successful Hybrid project manager will intentionally blend approaches and practices like an artist mixing paints. The Project Management Palette is a triangle. Purely Predictive and Agile practices are the endpoints of a continuum. Lean and Kanban represent the third leg and complement everything. Within the interior of the Palette are Hybrid patterns and practices that lean more toward Predictive or Agile. The key to success is intentionality, which requires effort, time, and patience. Hybrid project managers must thoughtfully tailor their management and execution plans.
In this presentation, Alan Zucker illustrates the value of visualizing our choices as a Palette and begins the dive into how those choices should be made. Participants will recognize the opportunity and responsibility of making context-driven decisions when planning and executing their projects.
